16 – 29 October 2010, Mt Fuji/Nagoya Japan
From 16 to 29 October 2010, Japan hosts the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Around 5,000 delegates from all over the world will meet in Nagoya to discuss steps that can be taken to conserve biodiversity. Before and during the conference, the International Youth Forum “Go4BioDiv” provides young adults from natural World Heritage Sites with a forum and a political platform for issues that concern them. The topic of this year’s Youth Forum is “Our treasures at risk – World Heritage sites in times of climate change.”

In the run-up to the Nagoya conference, the participants will prepare an introduction to their World Heritage Site and the region around it in an imaginative and creative way – making use of photos, comics, videos, songs, haiku poems or stories. From this material, a colourful and engaging exhibition of the young person’s perspective on natural World Heritage Sites will be developed. This will form part of the exhibition at CEPA Fair at COP10 and travel the world afterwards.

Youthink

How about kicking off the International Year of Youth by sharing something about your culture—and your wild imagination—with the rest of the world? We’re making it even easier for you by starting you off with a story. All you have to do is finish the story below, adding no more than 300 words. Give it a title too. Just one more thing: because the theme of the International Year of Youth relates to dialog and understanding across cultures, generations, borders, etc., we want you to include one thing about your culture in your story. It could be a song, a tradition, a piece of clothing, a verse from a poem…it’s up to you. So, what are you waiting for? Start storytelling!
"The Story
It was a boring summer day. His father was outside in the baking heat, working on their meager vegetable plants. His mother was cooking and his sister was scrubbing the kitchen floor. He knew he should go help his father, but right now all he could think about was getting an ice-cream from the village market. He still had some money left over from the birthday money his grandfather had given him—just enough to buy one for himself and one for his father (to make up for escaping work). “I’ll just run and get them,” he decided, “and then I’ll help him with whatever he’s doing.” He set off down the path, pretending not to hear when his sister called after him to ask where he was going. He had only walked for few minutes when he suddenly felt a tap on his arm. Turning, he saw a very old, bent man, peering up at him with watery eyes. In a tone of great urgency, the man said, “____"

Stand Up2010:September 17th - 19th
When world leaders gather at the United Nations for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Review Summit in September, the voices of their citizens will follow them, telling them, loudly and clearly: “We will no longer stay seated or silent in the face of poverty and the broken promises to end it!”
September 17th -19th, 2010: Three days of mobilization enabling all constituencies and anyone wanting to be a part of the mobilization to organize and participate in a wide range of events, relevant actions and initiatives to show their support for the achievement of the MDGs and have their voices heard articulating their demands for delegations attending the Summit.
Over this three day period, we are encouraging people and their organisations to continue to incorporate the Stand UP moment and pledge reading into their events and where relevant and possible to invite media to cover their events and initiatives. The Stand Up pledge will be adapted this year in line with the new timing to specifically reference the MDG Review Summit. As always, these pledges need to be adapted to incorporate relevant messaging for each participating organization or group.

No to Violence

Say NO – UNiTE
Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence against Women is a global call for action, launched in November 2009, on ending violence against women and girls. It is presented by UNIFEM as a contribution to advance the objectives of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s campaign UNiTE to End Violence against Women through social mobilization. UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman is the Spokesperson of Say NO.Based on country data available, up to 70 per cent of women experience physical or sexual violence from men in their lifetime. It happens everywhere – at home and at work, on the streets and in schools, during peacetime and in conflict. Violence against women and girls has far- reaching consequences, harming families and communities, stunting human development, and undermining economic growth. Everyone has a role to play in combating this global pandemic; the time to act together is NOW

Last year, on the first global Mandela Day, people across the world and from all walks of life took the future into their own hands, by volunteering their time and energy to the cause of social justice.
We call on all people to take a step into education on Mandela Day... and then make every day a Mandela Day...

Global Petition on Child Labour and the Millennium Development Goals
The continued existence of child labour is an obstacle to achieving the MDGs and, without achieving the MDGs, child labour cannot eliminated. The development goals of achieving the MDGs and eliminating and preventing child labour are inextricably linked and yet child labour remains as an invisible ninth MDG.
While not explicit in the list of eight Goals, eliminating child labour is nonetheless as critical as the others and cuts across the themes of them all. As long as millions children are forced by poverty and others circumstances into situations of exploitative labour, then they will continue to swell the ranks of those out of school.
